Originally unveiled in 2007, for the iPhone, iPhone, it has been extended to support other Apple devices such as the iPod Touch (September 2007), iPad (January 2010), iPad Mini (November 2012) and second-generation Apple TV onward (September 2010). As of January 2015, Apple's App Store contained more than 1.4 million iOS applications, 725,000 of which are native for iPads.[9] These mobile apps have collectively been downloaded more than 100 billion times.

WHAT IS iOS APP PROGRAMMING?

Apple makes iPhones,iPads etc. which run on the operating system called iOS. Any application software that run on these devices are called iOS Apps. To develop such apps, one needs knowledge of iOS app development which comprise of programming languages Objective C and Swift, and development environment called Xcode.

WHY iOS? iPhones and iPads can run only with iOS Apps. iOS will be in demand as long as these gadgets are in demand. iOS is very rare skill for a programmer and hence career opportunities will be more. Since the importance of mobility is on the rise, the demand for iOS programmers is going to be more.
